Seeing the Music

The activity is called  “Seeing the Music”.
The aim of the lesson was to review the vocabulary about emotions and past verb forms. Also the task for the Ss was to listen to three short melodies, draw the images of what first came to their minds or the emotions which occurred while listening to the melodies.


After drawing the pictures Ss had to write short descriptions of their drawings and emotions connected to the melodies.
Next Ss had to look at the neighbour’s drawings and write some words of what they see. The last task was to find simiiarities and differences in the pictures and descried them.
I have chosen the short melodies without words, so that the Ss would have their own ideas
All the Ss liked the activity as well they were surprised to do something unusual.
My aim was to encourage Ss writing through music, visualization. Have them show their emotions and feelings though colour.

Before doing the task we reviewed the vocabulary on feelings and colours.
 I have chosen three short melodies.

  • The first one was very familiar to the Ss as it is the melody of a children song. So most of the Ss thought and drew little ducklings, children and some festival motives. 
  • The second melody had some oriental notes and those Ss who are familiar with oriental culture drew some Chinese or Japanese elements, but the rest drew peaceful nature, sea and flowers and birds. All of them agreed that this melody made them feel calm and peaceful.
  •  The last melody was rather energetic. And here many differences in drawings occurred. Some drew elements from action movies, some drew cars or fighting.


But there were some points which didn’t go well enough. Among them was the lack of time and therefore the stories turned out to be just the separate sentences.
